Planning a Wedding at the Brazilian Room in Tilden Park, Berkeley

If you’re getting married in the San Francisco Bay Area and you’re looking for a unique wedding venue that strikes a great balance between natural beauty, convenience, and affordability, you should consider the Brazilian Room in Tilden Park, Berkeley. Hi, my name is Manali, and I’m a local wedding photographer who has worked at the Brazilian Room many times. I love this venue because it makes you feel surrounded by nature while taking advantage of all of the conveniences of getting married in a major urban area (such as access to nearby hotels and airports, making it easier on you and your traveling guests).

With this blog post, I will answer common questions about getting married at the Brazilian Room and give you an overview of what a typical wedding day can look like here. After the text, you will find photo examples of real couples who got married here. If you have booked the Brazilian Room and are looking for a deeper dive, definitely check out the photos. You will get timeline ideas and examples for decor, lighting, and room setup.

Let’s start with what it’s like to get married there. The Brazilian Room is an outdoor and indoor venue. In a nutshell, ceremonies usually take place on the lawn before a backdrop of tree-covered hills, and then the party moves inside the charming Brazilian Room for dinner, reception, and dancing.

How Many Guests Can the Brazilian Room Accommodate?

While the official capacity is 150 seated guests, the space will feel tight if you have that many guests, so I recommend having fewer to allow the space to feel more comfortable and spacious. This is also a great venue to consider for smaller weddings because the room is not so cavernous that it will feel empty. I once photographed a wedding there that had only about 30 guests. The couple ran one long banquet table through the middle of the room, and it looked gorgeous.

How Much Does It Cost to Rent the Brazilian Room?

That will vary based on the day of your wedding, the number of hours you rent the space, and whether you are a local resident of Alameda or Contra Costa County or not. Currently, at the time of writing, the Brazilian Room ranges from $560 on the low end for a morning wedding on a Monday, Wednesday or Thursday (for local residents) to $5538 for a full day buyout on a Saturday (for non-local residents). Even the high-end of their pricing is considered a real bargain for a venue like this in the Bay Area. Be aware that due to this being a great deal, it books out far in advance on weekends.

How Far in Advance Should I Book the Brazilian Room?

Weekend dates book out far in advance, like 18+ months. Reservations for the next calendar year open in January, so that means that in early 2026, bookings opened for 2027, and the slots quickly filled. You’ll find more availability for weekday weddings if you are open to hosting your wedding on a Friday or Thursday, for example. Also, it’s good to know that the Brazilian room offers either half-day or full-day buyout options for couples. If you’re planning on spending a lot of time on the dance floor, you will want to do a full-day rental.

Can I Bring My Own Caterer to the Brazilian Room?

There are two big qualifying requirements that you should be aware of, and that will help you know if this venue will potentially be a good fit for you.

  1. No, you can not bring your own caterer. You must work with one of the Brazilian Room’s approved caterers. The positives are that any company you hire from their list will know the venue very well, and there are many great options to choose from. The venue is very affordable, but some past couples have said they felt that the quotes they received back from caterers on the list were higher than they expected. You might want to request quotes from caterers before locking in with the Brazilian Room, so you feel like you are making an informed decision.
  2. The other important thing to know is that no hard alcohol is allowed. Only beer and wine may be served. So if you are set on drinking whiskey at your wedding, this will not be the right option for you.

What a typical wedding day at the Brazil Room may look like

Typically, couples will get ready at a nearby hotel or an Airbnb. Personally, I recommend staying within a 15-minute drive to make the day easier. Most couples don’t get ready at the Brazilian Room itself because the getting-ready room is tiny, not comfortable, and poorly lit. I highly recommend booking the Berkeley City Club or the Claremont Hotel. Check out both before you decide which one is right for you. I personally love the architecture at the Berkeley City Club, and it makes for great photos before moving on to the Brazilian Room. It was designed by Julia Morgan and is gorgeous, though it’s an older hotel, so most of the rooms are small and not modern. You might consider that charming or you might consider it uncomfortable; it just depends on what matters to you.

After getting ready, many couples choose to do a first look before the ceremony. That is when the couple sees each other before the wedding ceremony and takes photos. This allows the couple to spend more time with their guests after the ceremony is over, and it can allow you to take photos at another location that you wouldn’t fit in after the ceremony. Because the area immediately surrounding the Brazilian Room gets exposed to a lot of direct sun in the afternoon, it can make taking first-look photos in nice light challenging, so I work with my couples to plan their timeline and decide where first-look photos will make the most sense for them.

I often recommend doing a first look at the Tilden Regional Parks Botanic Garden, which is literally next door to the Brazilian Room. The redwood groves offer shade and very flattering light, making it a convenient as well as beautiful option. You will need to reserve this with the park in addition to your Brazilian Room reservation and pay a fee of about $250- $400 at least 31 business days in advance. That’s over 6 weeks in advance, so you’ll need to confirm your timeline and plan for this ahead. You can bring guests in with you so you can take care of the wedding party and family photos before the ceremony here if you choose. Please note that everyone will have to be able-bodied to easily navigate the gardens, so it won’t work for photos with folks in wheelchairs or who have trouble walking.

There are alternative places for a first look before your Brazilian Room Wedding. I like the UC Berkeley Botanical Gardens (10 minutes away), or the Berkeley City Club, as already mentioned, or the Claremont Hotel

I’ve experienced all types of weather up on Tilden, from cool days with thick dreamy fog, to sunny days. The ceremony location is exposed and bright on sunny days. I recommend arriving on site at the Brazilian Room at least 30 minutes before your ceremony time, if not much earlier than that, depending on your timeline.

After the wedding ceremony, guests usually mingle for cocktail hour in the same space where the ceremony happens. And at the start of dinner, folks move inside the hall. The room always looks so beautiful when it’s done up for dinner service. Soft light comes in from one side while there’s still daylight. I love the high white ceilings with wooden beams. And as a photographer, I appreciate the white ceilings for bouncing light from my flash to create a large, flattering light source. The room is much better for photo taking than rooms that are entirely paneled in wood. Once the light softens in the evening, I like taking couples out to the lawn for sunset portraits. The photos feel romantic, and it’s convenient since you don’t have to wander far to get gorgeous golden hour photos.

Does the Brazilian Room Have Onsite Parking?

Yes, there are about 35 spaces, and there is an overflow lot nearby. Guests can drive themselves, though you might want to consider hiring a shuttle for guests. They will really appreciate it if you do, especially since the roads are winding and dark at night. Some people call a rideshare to the Brazilian Room, but not everyone gets good enough cell phone reception up there to allow for calling a rideshare back home.

What’s the Best Time of Year to Get Married at the Brazilian Room?

The Brazilian Room will be best in any month where rain is less likely, from spring through fall, though it can be a great winter wedding venue for small weddings. Here’s what it is like in different months and seasons. Spring is a beautiful time to get married at the Brazilian Room. Two mature cherry trees frame the entrance to the property through the parking lot and blossom in late March to early April, and look stunning when they do. June and July weddings should be prepared for fog, or overcast skies, but it’s not all bad. Fog can create soft, beautiful light, which I actually love as a photographer. Mid-August through mid-October tends to bring more clear, sunny days and warmer weather. Though it can get warm, Tilden Park is usually cooler than areas farther inland or wine country, so that’s another plus for this East Bay wedding venue. If you plan a winter wedding here (November–February), you should be prepared to move your wedding ceremony indoors if it rains. For that reason, I would recommend planning smaller weddings only in winter at the Brazilian Room. Contact the Brazilian Room or your preferred caterer to see what they recommend for the guest count for an indoor wedding here. If you are planning a large winter wedding, I would recommend you consider a place like San Francisco City Hall instead.

Should I Hire a Day-of Coordinator for My Brazilian Room Wedding?

I’ve seen many weddings get away with only using their catering company for day-of coordination, and I’ve also seen folks choose to hire an independent month-of wedding planner. As a wedding professional who has been to hundreds of weddings, I will say that weddings always run more smoothly when you hire a dedicated planner. Your catering team is focused on your food, so anything besides food is secondary to their main concern.

Overall, the Brazilian Room is a fantastic venue for couples who want a blend of natural beauty and a convenient and elegant reception space. It will make for a memorable wedding day that feels intimate and authentically Bay Area.

Here’s a tip- consider hiring a company to install string lights and uplighting as seen in some of these photos. It helps elevate the space a little more!

A sweetheart table. This couple hired a company to add the string lights over the fireplace, which really helped brighten up a spot that gets a little dark otherwise. They also got uplighting throughout the room.
